Bookbinding Kit: Make the notebook before filling it

For someone who enjoys paper and patient handwork, a bookbinding kit turns folded sheets, covers and thread into a book of their own.

Which kind of book would they like to make?

Bookbinding kits range from a few sewing tools to a complete notebook project. A small sewn pamphlet can give a beginner a clear first result; a hard-cover journal or a new cover for an existing paperback involves a different process. Choose the project they would enjoy making, rather than assuming every kit teaches the same skill.

Look for illustrated instructions that cover the actual binding supplied. A set of needles, an awl and a folding tool is useful equipment, but it is not necessarily a lesson. If the teaching is online, check how they access it and whether printed guidance is included.

Read past the tools in the photograph

  • Paper and covers: check whether these are included, their finished size and how many books the materials will make. A tool set may supply neither.

  • Thread and fastening: confirm the kit has the needles, thread, tape or other supplies its chosen method requires.

  • Gluing and pressing: check for adhesive and brushes where needed, plus any weights, press or protected work surface the instructions ask them to provide.

Think about the finished notebook too. Blank, lined and heavier drawing paper suit different uses; do not assume ordinary kit paper will take wet paint or fountain-pen ink well. Pre-cut materials can reduce the measuring and trimming needed for a first attempt.

This is a gift for someone who would enjoy making the book, not simply receiving stationery. Allow space for paper and tools, and drying or pressing time when the method needs it. Awls, needles and any cutting tools require care, so check the makerโ€™s age guidance.

For a first project, making a new blank book is a more forgiving aim than repairing a treasured volume. A general craft kit does not establish that its materials or methods are appropriate for an old or valuable book.

When they already bind books

For a regular maker, refill paper, cover board, cloth, thread or adhesive to match a project they have chosen. Check their usual sizes and materials before buying a replacement kit.

A folder helps with creasing; a punching cradle supports hole-making; a sewing frame holds tapes or cords for particular structures. A book press is separate pressing equipment. Choose these tools for their method, rather than assuming every first kit needs them.
