Book Press: A steady place to press their handmade books
A book press holds binding work between plates, with the usable area and opening chosen for the recipient’s projects and workspace.

Measure the work, not just the press
A compact press can hold a small handmade book while the maker follows a binding or drying process. Compare the space between the bolts with the finished book: the outside board dimensions can overstate the usable area.
Opening height matters too. Allow for the book block and any protective boards or other materials their method calls for. Check how the plates are tightened and how evenly they meet, rather than judging capacity from a photograph alone.
A tool that needs somewhere to live
Wooden plate presses and heavier metal mechanisms differ in weight, operation and storage needs. A small screw press may suit a home bench, while a larger model needs a stable surface and room to turn its handles or nuts. Consider whether the recipient can comfortably lift and adjust it.
Read the contents for screws, nuts and any assembly needed. Follow the supplier’s setup and use instructions; a press does not correct a badly aligned binding or guarantee flat results with every adhesive.
This is a separate tool for someone who already has a bookmaking method. A bookbinding kit provides a different starting point, and may still require pressing equipment. Do not assume a flower-press set has the working area or construction they need for books.
