Buy cloth made for covering books
Book cloth is a covering material, often supplied with a paper backing or another finish that helps it work in a binding. Ordinary sewing fabric is not automatically an equivalent: backing, weave and the adhesive used all affect the result.
Distinguish cover cloth from spine reinforcement. Open-weave mull or super supports a binding internally; it is not the same purchase as a decorative outer cover. Repair tape and self-adhesive cover films serve different jobs too.
Measure the whole cover before picking a color
The material needs to wrap the boards, cover the spine where the design requires it and turn in around the edges. Work from the recipient's pattern, not simply the finished front-cover size. Several small sheets can suit little notebooks but cannot always replace one continuous piece for a larger case.
A favorite color or subtle texture can make this a thoughtful refill. Consider whether they want plain cloth, a coated surface or a pronounced weave, and check that any decorative treatment they plan is supported by the product. Do not assume it accepts ink, foil or heat transfers.
Read whether the cloth needs separate adhesive or already has an adhesive backing. If they have not made a book before, a bookbinding kit can offer a clearer introduction than covering material alone.
