For a musician, ask how many performers or sound sources they expect to record. For interviews or notes, simple controls and clear speech matter more than extra tracks or specialist inputs.

Check the recording connections

Built-in stereo microphones keep the setup compact. A microphone input is useful if they already own an external mic, while XLR inputs suit more involved equipment and usually raise the price. Confirm the connector type before assuming their existing microphone will work.

Plan for storage and power

Check whether a memory card, batteries or charging cable are included. Recording at higher quality uses more storage, and long sessions are easier when the recorder can run from common batteries, USB power or a dependable rechargeable pack.

Listen to the handling, not just the headline specification
