Picture Frame: A favourite photograph, ready to take its place

A picture frame gives a printed photograph or small artwork a place at home. Match the image size, mount opening and display position before choosing a finish.

Give the picture a home

Start with a photograph or print the recipient would like to live with. It might show a familiar view, a shared occasion or an ordinary moment worth keeping. The frame should help that picture settle into their home, rather than make the border the main event.

A physical frame holds one image without needing power or a phone. If the appeal is changing the pictures regularly or sharing them remotely, compare a digital photo frame before choosing.

If choosing the image is part of the present, an art print offers a different starting point from a photograph. Confirm a physical print, its image and paper measurements and any border before choosing a frame or mount.

Read the opening as well as the size

The advertised size may describe the print the frame takes with its mount removed. With a mount in place, the visible picture area is smaller. Compare the supplied mount opening with the photograph, particularly around faces or writing near an edge.

UK listings can use inches, centimetres or paper sizes such as A4. Match the actual measurements rather than assuming two similar labels are interchangeable. A mounted artwork may also need more depth than a normal photographic print.

Standing, hanging and everyday handling

  • For a shelf or mantelpiece, allow for the frame's depth and the space taken by its rear support.

  • For wall display, establish which way it hangs and whether suitable wall fixings are included.

  • Read whether the clear front is glass, acrylic or another plastic; its weight and cleaning instructions can differ.

Choose the finish with their furniture and other pictures in mind. A narrow border is easier to fit into a mixed display; a broad or ornate surround makes more of a style statement.

A wooden choice for five years

The solid-wood option can acknowledge the fifth wedding-anniversary tradition while remaining an ordinary frame they can enjoy afterwards. Read the material description for the exact choice: a wood-effect colour is not enough to establish solid wood. The backing and clear front need not themselves be wooden.

Follow the maker's placement and care instructions. Avoid assuming a decorative frame will protect a valuable photograph from light, damp or deterioration; use a copy when keeping the original safe matters.

Leave room for the photograph

An engraved name or short caption can connect a frame to the picture inside. Choose the photograph first, then compare the visible opening, portrait or landscape layout and where the lettering will sit. A printed photo plaque is not the same as a frame with a replaceable insert.

Read whether the price includes a print or only the custom frame. Review spelling and dates in any offered proof, and make sure the recipient would welcome permanent wording on display. A note on the back or a separate card can carry a message more quietly.

Marking their 25th or 50th anniversary

For a 25th or 50th wedding anniversary, a chosen photograph can sit beside a short engraved message or wedding date. The personalised frame choice includes designs with any-text fields. Confirm that the selected design accepts the anniversary wording you want, rather than assuming that a box for two names also allows a longer caption.

A silver or golden anniversary can be recognised in the inscription without a silver or gold frame. Check the photo opening and engraving layout together, then allow for the seller’s stated production and delivery time.
