Art Print: A picture with a place in their home

An art print can make a thoughtful present when the subject and style suit its owner. Check the physical format, dimensions and framing as carefully as the image.

Choose for the person who will live with it

A familiar place, a favourite subject or an artist the recipient follows can give a print a personal connection. Start there, rather than choosing a picture only because it matches a fashionable room. Establish whether they want wall art and where it might go.

A small piece for a shelf and a large print above furniture have different space requirements. If their taste is particular, choosing the image together can be part of the present. The surprise need not depend on guessing what belongs on their wall.

Establish the format before buying

A reproduction is a different purchase from an original painting. Read whether the listing supplies a physical paper print, printed canvas, stretched canvas or a framed picture. Digital downloads can appear alongside physical artwork. A room photograph is not evidence that the frame or hanging fittings are included.

Compare the sheet or canvas measurements, the printed image and any surrounding border. If it needs a separate picture frame, check the opening and mount as well as the outer size. A print described as A3 or 30 × 40 cm still needs its actual dimensions confirmed for the chosen display.

Know the source and the handover

Choose a seller, artist or publisher that clearly describes what is being reproduced and supplied. A signature or limited-edition claim needs supporting detail; an artist’s name in a search title alone does not establish authenticity. Decorative appeal is a sound reason to give a print without suggesting it has investment value.

Check whether it arrives rolled or flat, how it is packed and any display or care instructions. Colours viewed on a screen can differ from the print. A ready-framed version still needs appropriate hanging hardware and agreement before fixing it to the wall.

Paper artwork for a first anniversary

For a paper anniversary, choose a finished physical print on paper, rather than a canvas reproduction, digital download or pack of blank printing sheets. An unframed print leaves the frame style open, but check the paper dimensions, border and cost of a separate frame. A meaningful subject matters more than anniversary wording.
