Custom Couple Portrait: A familiar moment, made into artwork

Turn a photograph of two people into a portrait in a style they would want at home. A clear brief and a checked proof help make the likeness personal, whether the finished gift is a print, canvas or original drawing.

Choose the picture before the portrait style

A favourite photograph is more useful than a technically perfect picture neither person likes. Think about the moment it captures and where the finished gift might go. A relaxed holiday picture can be as meaningful as a wedding photograph, especially when it reflects the couple as they are now.

The style changes the gift. A playful caricature needs a willing audience; a simple line drawing and a detailed painted effect ask for different expectations of likeness. Read the seller's actual process: hand-painted, digitally illustrated and photo-effect prints are different purchases. Texture in an example does not prove an original painting is supplied.

Give the maker a clear brief

Start with the best original photograph available and permission to send it for the order. Faces lost in shadow or a small image saved from social media may be difficult to work from. Combining people from separate pictures can require extra work, so agree that before paying.

Find out which changes are included, whether a proof is offered and when approval is needed. Look at both faces, the crop and any names or date. Keep a copy of the agreed details rather than relying on a short order note.

Allow for the parts after the artwork

Check that the order includes a physical print, canvas or original, not only a download. Compare its actual measurements with the intended wall space, and confirm the frame, mounting and postage. A low starting price may describe the smallest unframed version.

Production, proof changes and delivery all need room before a fixed celebration. Read arrangements for mistakes and personalised returns. If the recipients would prefer a place to a portrait, a custom house portrait offers another personal commission; a photo book keeps a larger collection together without needing wall space.
