Yarn Bowl: A little order beside the knitting chair
A yarn bowl holds the working ball and guides the strand while someone knits or crochets. A smooth slot, steady base and the right inside dimensions matter more than an elaborate shape.

£10–£30What does the bowl add?
A yarn bowl gives the working ball a place to sit, with a guide in the side for the strand. It can be a useful addition to a knitting or crochet corner, especially when the recipient unwinds yarn from the outside of a ball.
Ask how they usually manage their yarn. They may pull from the centre of a yarn cake (a flat-topped wound bundle), use a project bag or already have a favourite holder. The bowl should suit that habit rather than arrive as another thing to work around.
Check the yarn's route
Look closely at the inside of the bowl, the rim and the guide. Everything the yarn touches should be smooth, with no rough glaze, sharp edges or splinters to snag it.
A slot that opens at the rim lets the recipient remove the strand without cutting it. Closed holes may have other uses, but aren't the same as an open guide when taking a project out of the bowl. Check the maker's description rather than judging by the decorative swirl alone.
The inside needs enough room for their usual ball or cake. Check usable width and depth, and whether the yarn can move as their method requires. A larger bowl can be useful for bulky yarn, but also needs more space beside the chair.
Choose something they'll keep to hand
A steady base and manageable weight matter on the surface where it will sit. Compare wood and ceramic around the recipient's taste and care routine; either still needs a well-finished yarn path.
Lids, novelty shapes and extra hooks are optional additions. A plain bowl that fits their yarn can be more useful than a larger bundle, and it won't wind a loose hank (a looped bundle) or promise that tangles never happen.
Give the bowl empty unless you know which yarn they want. That leaves them free to use it with the project already on their needles or hook.
The separate wooden bowl can follow the traditional wood theme for a fifth wedding anniversary. Confirm a real wooden body and smooth yarn guides that work with the yarn they normally use. It should suit a knitting or crochet routine they already enjoy, rather than relying on the tradition to make it useful. Ceramic and other designs remain available through the general choice.
