Find the right loom for their first make
For a first tapestry-style textile, look for a frame loom with lengthwise warp threads and yarn woven across them. A knitting loom or rubber-band bracelet set is a different craft. Potholder loop kits are another format again, so read the method rather than relying on the word loom.
Match the project to something they would like to make: a small hanging can be a manageable place to begin. Compare the working width inside the frame, rather than just its outer measurements. A small loom does not automatically provide a way to weave a long scarf or a large blanket.
Read the materials and learning support together
The kit needs suitable warp thread as well as yarn for the woven surface. Check the supplied quantities, shuttle or weaving needle and comb against the proposed project. Some listings sell mainly the wooden frame, with yarn or finished examples shown for illustration.
Clear guidance should cover threading the loom, weaving without pulling the edges too tight and removing the work. Check any assembly and whether the instructions are printed, online or both. Someone new to the craft will benefit from seeing the whole process, while a reusable frame lets them continue with different yarn afterwards.
