Trivia Game: A good excuse to share the answer they know

A trivia game brings a quiz to their table, from broad general knowledge to a subject they love. Choose the question style and edition for the actual group.

Buy the quiz they would enjoy

Some people relish a broad pub-style quiz; others would rather answer questions about a favourite subject. The useful choice is the content and pace, rather than the biggest number of questions printed on the box.

Read sample cards before buying. Regional references make a real difference: a set written around American sports or television may not be the quiz a British group expects. Check the language and edition, and remember that facts about current records, office-holders or popular culture can date.

Fast answers or time to think?

The rules shape the evening. A timed individual round, a team discussion and a game with clues can ask quite different things of players. Choose around how comfortable they are speaking quickly, reading small print and answering in front of others.

Look at the stated player range and how teams work, rather than assuming a quiz scales to any party. Clear print and useful contrast can make a set easier to share; a colourful board doesn't establish that the questions are readable.

Some editions include a board or timer, while others are compact question cards. App-connected quizzes may need a compatible device, internet access or paid extra packs. Confirm the requirements and costs for the exact product. A physical box does not guarantee screen-free play.

Check what they already know

Find out which quiz games are already on the shelf. An expansion may need a base game, and a revised box can repeat questions from an older edition. A complete new set is often the simpler gift when you cannot confirm compatibility.

Once players have learned the answers, the same questions may offer less of a challenge. Think about how often the group will play and whether they like revisiting familiar material.

If they would rather guess words or respond to playful prompts, a party card game serves a different purpose. A strategy board game puts more emphasis on decisions than remembered facts.
