Tea Strainer: A loose-leaf brew in their own favourite cup
A standalone tea filter is a useful little present for someone with a mug or teapot they already like. Match the basket, ball or pouring strainer to the way they brew, and leave room for the leaves.

Keep the cup, add the filter
For someone who enjoys loose-leaf tea, a separate filter can be more welcome than another mug. It works with a cup or pot they have chosen themselves. A tea tasting set alongside it gives them something to try, if you know the styles they like.
First distinguish steeping from straining. An infuser basket or tea ball sits in the water with the leaves. A small pouring strainer catches leaves as tea leaves the teapot. These are related tools, but buying one does not necessarily replace the other.
Choose for the vessel and the leaf
Compare a basket's width and depth with the cup it will sit in. Its rim or handles need support, and the body should fit without being forced. Leaf size matters independently: tightly filling a small tea ball leaves little room for a generous portion to open out.
Very fine particles can pass through some meshes. Look at the product's actual construction, rather than relying on a picture of a decorative shape. A screw lid, hinged ball or open basket also changes how easily the filter can be filled and emptied.
Useful details to establish before buying:
The opening and usable depth of the recipient's cup.
Whether the filter is for steeping or pouring.
Where the wet filter will rest after use.
A small tool that needs ordinary care
A lid that serves as a drip dish can be handy, but it is not supplied with every basket. Parts may become hot; retain the maker's handling and cleaning instructions. Accessible mesh and hinges make the daily wash less fiddly, and the filter should dry before it is put away.
An integrated infuser mug is a different present when the recipient wants a new cup as well. For shared servings, an infuser teapot may make more sense. Choose the smaller filter when keeping their familiar vessel is the point.
