A tablecloth needs to suit the shape and dimensions of the recipient's table, including any extension they use when guests come round. Allow for the amount they want hanging over each edge. Runners and placemats need their own measurements; a photograph of a beautifully laid table cannot tell you whether a set will fit.

What does a table linen set include?

The name covers table textiles: some sets are matching cloth napkins, others include a runner, mats or a tablecloth. Count useful place settings rather than advertised pieces because rings and other accessories may be included in the total.

For someone who enjoys entertaining, enough napkins or mats for their normal number of guests matters more than an elaborate bundle. Check the chosen pack; items shown together in a photograph are not necessarily sold together.

Work with the dishes they already own

A colour or pattern they like can refresh the table without replacing everything on it. Consider their plates, room and preferred style: a bold check does a different job from a plain fabric. Other home decorating ideas may be easier to choose if you cannot find out the table measurements.

Table linen does not always mean linen fabric

These textiles may be cotton, flax linen, blends or synthetic fabrics. Read the fibre label rather than treating the category name or a linen-look description as a material guarantee. Washing, drying and ironing instructions are part of deciding whether they will enjoy using the present.

• Check the shape and measurements of each textile against their table and plates.

• Choose a pack with enough complete settings for their usual guests.

• Look for care instructions that suit the recipient's routine.

Stain-resistant and heat-resistant wording needs checking for the exact item; table textiles are not automatically protection for hot pans.

For Christmas, weigh an everyday design against a festive one they would need to store between seasons. A Thanksgiving present should suit someone who celebrates and welcomes the set, without expecting them to change a table they have already planned.

Table textiles for Diwali

A wanted napkin set, runner or cloth can be useful beyond the celebration. Check the recipient’s table dimensions and taste first. The present can be enjoyed another day; it need not displace the linen they have already chosen for guests.

Cotton or linen for their table

For a cotton or linen anniversary, begin with the fibre content rather than the phrase “table linen”. Cotton and flax linen are different choices, and a linen-look polyester napkin does not establish either. A matching napkin set can be enough of a gift: check the number of places, dimensions and care directions without assuming a tablecloth comes with it.
