Sports Coaching Book: New ideas for the player who loves learning

A printed coaching book gives an interested player tactics, drills or technique to think about between games. Choose the sport and level carefully, then look at the author's experience and a sample of the pages.

Choose the reader before the book

Someone learning the rules needs a different book from a regular player working on shot choices. A coach planning sessions has another set of questions again. Start with what the recipient is curious about, rather than assuming a technical manual is always the most thoughtful gift.

Make the sport explicit

Pickleball and padel have different equipment, rules and tactics. Choose a book about the recipient’s sport, then check the exact title and edition, the language and whether the advice is aimed at players or coaches.

  • Read the contents and sample pages to judge the level, diagrams and writing style.

  • Look for a named author whose relevant experience can be checked.

  • Check the publication date where rules or competition details matter.

Give them something to read, not just a cover

A notebook, match log or novelty slogan book may be enjoyable, but it does not serve the same purpose as instruction. Choose the print format deliberately: paperback and hardcover prices differ, and a free trial or subscription listing is not a physical book to wrap.

A good match can give a keen reader a drill to try or a tactical question to discuss with a partner. It is reading material rather than personal coaching, and no title can guarantee progress. If they already follow a particular coach, finding out whether they own that coach's book is a useful first check.
