Find out what a good night at camp means to them

Some campers want room to turn over; others want the smallest possible bundle in a rucksack. A sleeping bag can be a lovely present once you know which problem the recipient wants to solve. Their current bag is a useful starting point: too bulky, too snug or simply ready to retire?

Rectangular bags tend to leave more room and may open into a quilt-like blanket. Mummy designs taper towards the feet and often add a hood. Neither shape is automatically the right one. Compare the stated usable length and shoulder space with the person who will sleep in it.

Read the warmth information carefully

Season descriptions are broad shopping labels. A comfort temperature is more useful than an impressive extreme figure, particularly when the maker explains the test behind it. Comfort, lower-limit and extreme ratings refer to different thresholds; the lowest number should never be treated as a promise of a pleasant night.

The complete sleeping arrangement matters as well. A bag cannot replace insulation underneath the sleeper, and clothing, shelter and individual comfort affect the result. Choose for the expected conditions rather than stretching a general campsite bag into winter mountain use.

Consider the journey and the cupboard

For walking trips, look at carried weight and packed dimensions together. Car camping leaves more scope for a roomy bag that takes up space. Fill material affects bulk, care and drying: down and synthetic bags have different requirements, so the manufacturer’s care instructions deserve a look before purchase.

Check the supplied storage and compression bags. Tight packing can help during transport, but long-term storage may need more space and a breathable sack. If joining two bags matters, confirm compatible zips and the correct sides rather than relying on photographs.

For Christmas or a birthday, let the recipient help choose the warmth and fit, then keep the receipt for a check at home. There’s still pleasure in unwrapping wanted equipment without leaving their first night away to guesswork.

A camping tent is a separate shelter choice if their sleeping kit is complete. A sleeping bag still needs a suitable insulating mat beneath it.
