Sapphire Earrings: A little blue beside a familiar smile

Let their usual earrings lead

Studs stay close to the ear; drops bring movement; small hoops offer another everyday shape. Notice which the recipient already wears, including whether their ears are pierced. A gemstone pair is a poor surprise if the fastening or piercing type is wrong.

Measure a pair they enjoy if possible. Overall drop and weight per earring tell you more about comfort than a huge close-up of the stones. Hair, glasses and scarves can also make a small stud easier to wear than a long design.

Read the blue stone and the post separately

Natural and lab-created sapphire can both provide the blue. “Sapphire-coloured”, blue crystal and cubic zirconia describe alternatives, not the same stone. Look for an explicit stone description and treatment disclosure. For metal sensitivities, establish the material of the post, back and setting, rather than relying on “hypoallergenic” in a title. A plated surface does not identify the metal beneath it.

• Push backs should fit securely and be easy for the wearer to handle.

• Screw backs take more turning but may suit someone who prefers that fastening.

• Leverbacks and hoop closures need enough room around the ear and a catch that closes properly.

Make sure the listing is for a pair

Some piercing jewellery is sold singly. Confirm the quantity, the stone measurements and whether a box is included. Returns on pierced earrings may be restricted, especially once opened, so read the actual hygiene policy before buying.

A sapphire pendant necklace offers the same blue without needing pierced ears. If the recipient wears rings more often, compare a sapphire ring instead.
