Rice Cooker: Give the rice its own place on the worktop
A rice cooker can take a familiar task off the hob, provided its working capacity, settings and care suit the meals the recipient enjoys.

Compare the same measure first
One rice cooker may advertise uncooked rice capacity while another gives the amount it produces. The little measuring cup supplied with the machine may not match an ordinary kitchen cup either. Establish what the number measures before comparing size, then use the appliance's own quantities and water markings.
Minimum batch size matters alongside maximum capacity. A compact cooker can be more practical for a small household than a large vessel that needs more rice to work well. A digital kitchen scale is useful for other cooking, but it does not override a rice cooker's filling method.
How much control would they enjoy?
A simple cook-and-warm switch can suit a familiar routine. Programmed models may offer brown-rice, porridge or texture settings, with different waiting times and preparation instructions. Look for the meals they actually want to make.
Fuzzy logic describes cooking control that adjusts using sensor information. It can be useful, but it is not a promise that any rice and water combination will work. A shorter menu of relevant settings can serve the cook better than an impressive count of unused programmes.
Include cleaning in the daily routine
The bowl needs to lift out comfortably, and a hinged lid needs room under cupboards. Allow the ventilation space specified by the maker. Inspect removable inner-lid and condensation parts as well as the main bowl; convenient cleaning makes a frequently used appliance easier to live with.
Find out which utensils can touch the bowl's coating and whether a replacement bowl is available. A supplied paddle, measuring cup and steaming tray are useful only when present in the exact package. Pressure models also bring different operating requirements from a simple rice boiler.
Decide what happens after the cooking
Read the permitted warming times and supported foods rather than treating a keep-warm light as indefinite storage. Delay timers need recipe-specific care too. Give the instructions with the cooker so its convenient routine starts with the correct preparation and safe handling.
