A rotating support, not a throwing machine

A banding wheel is turned by hand to bring different sides of a piece within reach. It can help with coil-building, sculpting, painting and decorating. It does not power the clay around at throwing speed, and it is a distinct gift from an electric pottery wheel.

Stability is the useful upgrade

Look for a smooth bearing, a level turntable and a base that stays put. Disc diameter and load capacity should suit the forms they make. A very small lightweight cake turntable is not necessarily a useful substitute for a heavy clay piece.

Height changes how it feels to work

A low model can be easier to use at a table; a taller pedestal gives more clearance around the work. Consider their usual bench and seated position. Grooves can help with positioning, but they are not a substitute for checking the piece is secure before turning it.

A rotating stand works well alongside a familiar Pottery Tool Set for shaping and surface work. Clay, brushes and firing arrangements remain separate choices.
