Play Kitchen: A kitchen for their own make-believe café
Pretend kitchens turn familiar cooking routines into play. Find a size the home can welcome, then look at the doors, knobs and accessories the child will enjoy using.

Agree on the footprint first
A play kitchen stays in the room after the wrapping has gone. Ask the grown-up where it would fit, then compare the width, depth and worktop height. Doors need room to open, and the child needs space to move in front of it.
Bigger is only better when there is somewhere for it to live. A small station with a hob, oven and sink may suit the household more than a multi-appliance kitchen with a large fridge or serving counter.
Look at what the child can do
Knobs to turn, cupboards to fill and an oven to open give pretend cooking its rhythm. Lights and sounds are optional extras. If they appeal, establish the battery requirements and whether the noises can be turned off.
Wooden and plastic kitchens differ in weight, finishes and cleaning. Follow the maker’s care advice; an imitation sink does not necessarily hold real water, and an indoor kitchen should not be left outside unless the product is designed for it.
Allow for the extras and the assembly
Look for a clear list of supplied pans, utensils and play food. Props in the photographs may be sold separately. A few useful pieces can get a café started without a whole second box of accessories.
Consider the practical handover:
Follow the exact age recommendation and small-part warnings.
Check the tools, assembly steps and any securing instructions.
Make sure the packed and assembled sizes work for delivery and transport.
At Christmas, agree who will put it together. An assembled surprise can be wonderful; an unexpected flat-pack project needs time, a clear area and a willing adult. It is worth settling those details before the parcel arrives.
For a smaller pretend-play gift, hand puppets can create a cast of characters without taking over a corner of the room.
