Plant Pot: A new setting for a favourite plant
A useful pot starts with the plant and the space it will occupy. Choose the inside size, drainage and finish deliberately; a new plant does not have to come with it.
Ways to shop
Choose the pot around the plant
An empty pot gives a houseplant enthusiast something useful to choose around a plant they already own. The shape and glaze can bring a little colour to a shelf, but the inside measurements and drainage decide whether it will do the job. There is no need to add an unfamiliar plant to make the present complete.
The inside measurement is the useful one
A decorative cover pot often holds the separate nursery pot the plant came in. Compare its internal diameter and depth with that container, with enough clearance to take it out comfortably. An outside measurement across a thick rim will not tell you whether the inner pot fits.
For direct planting, find out which size the recipient actually wants. A very large pot is not automatically a better present. It should suit the plant and the way they water it, rather than ask them to repot something that was happy where it was.
Where will the water go?
Find out whether the pot has drainage holes or is a solid cover pot.
For a drainage pot, check whether a correctly sized saucer is supplied.
Confirm that the pot and saucer are suitable for the surface and location.
Read indoor, outdoor and frost guidance for the exact material and finish.
A cover pot without holes can suit a nursery pot that is lifted out for watering. Avoid leaving water trapped around it. A saucer may catch drips, but the plant’s care requirements still determine when and how it is watered. Read any advice about seepage and protect furniture from moisture or a rough base.
Choose a material they will want to handle
A ceramic pot can be an attractive object in its own right, while a lightweight plastic container can be easier to move. The empty pot’s weight is only part of what they will handle once a plant and growing medium are added. Stone-look plastic and genuine fired ceramic are different choices.
For a pottery anniversary, choose actual fired ceramic and a style that belongs in their home. The anniversary connection should make a useful present feel considered, rather than turn the wrong size into a good choice.
For someone who would prefer tools for their existing plants, a houseplant care set offers a different kind of help. An indoor herb garden is a separate growing project; it is not the same gift as a pot for a plant they already have.
