Photo Locket: A picture with a place of its own

A locket gives a chosen photograph a small, private home in a piece of jewellery. Consider the wearer’s style and the picture together, including who will print and fit the insert.

Choose a photograph for the wearer

An opening locket can hold a partner, relative, friend, pet or simply a moment the wearer wants to remember. It need not carry a bereavement message. Agree the choice where appropriate, and avoid uploading someone else's private photograph without permission.

The space inside is smaller than the outside of the pendant. A simple portrait with room around the face is usually easier to crop than a group picture. Read the usable insert size and shape before choosing the file.

Decide how it will arrive

A photograph shown in a listing may illustrate the result rather than be a service included in every version. Establish whether the seller supplies a fitted print, a template, or an empty locket that still needs filling. Where you approve a preview, inspect the crop and any engraving together.

Projection necklaces are another format, with a tiny image viewed through a lens. They are not the same as a hinged pendant opening onto a paper photograph. Read the actual product's mechanism rather than relying on the phrase 'photo necklace'.

Keep the jewellery choice personal too

Notice the chain length and sort of fastening the recipient enjoys using. Compare the complete pendant dimensions, weight and chain, checking the metal in each part separately. A silver-coloured finish does not establish sterling silver, and plating is not solid precious metal.

Follow the exact care instructions, particularly around water and a paper insert. Leave time for printing, fitting and post, and read the seller's personalised correction and return arrangements. A pendant necklace without a photo compartment may suit someone who wants decoration rather than a picture keepsake.
