Match the kind of kit to their experience
Needle felting compacts wool fibres with a special barbed needle to build shapes or images. It does not involve stitching ready-cut felt panels. Establish whether the recipient wants a first lesson, a particular miniature or more materials for a craft they already know.
A single project with step-by-step photographs can be a clearer introduction than a box of many colours. More experienced makers may welcome an assortment instead. Read the finished measurements and required techniques; a tiny animal can still involve careful shaping and detailed work.
Look past the colour count
Check the weight or quantity of each wool colour. Small samples may be useful for details without providing enough for the main body of a sculpture. For a project kit, the materials should match the design; a general supply set may not contain a pattern for the pictured examples.
The working surface is a separate check. Some kits include a felting pad, while others offer foam as an optional addition. Confirm the needles, safe storage and any spare tools as well. Instructions should take the recipient through forming the piece and adding features, rather than expecting them to copy one finished photograph.
Choose for careful making and display
Sharp felting needles require care and can break with incorrect handling. Follow the manufacturer's working, age and supervision guidance. Finger protectors may be included, but do not replace a suitable setup or make the tools appropriate for every young maker.
Pick a design they would like to keep on display and allow time to learn the shaping. Do not assume the completed object is a children's or pet toy, especially where small components are added. Part of the pleasure is making their own version, rather than reproducing the box image perfectly.
