Navigation Compass: A useful companion to a paper map

A navigation compass suits a hiker who enjoys map work or is ready to learn it. Clear markings and a familiar format matter more than an impressive list of survival features.

Choose for the maps they actually use

A transparent baseplate lets the user work on a paper map, with reference lines, a rotating housing and a direction-of-travel arrow supporting common techniques. Check the printed map scales against the recipient’s own maps. A sighting compass is a different format; an experienced hiker may prefer a particular arrangement already.

Look closely at the needle, bezel and reference markings. They should be easy to read and handle rather than simply numerous. A decorative brass compass may make an attractive keepsake, but it is not an automatic substitute for an instrument chosen for map navigation.

Learning is part of the present

A compass provides direction, not a position or a safe route. For a beginner, instruction and practice in a familiar place can be more useful than buying the most elaborate model. A birthday upgrade for an experienced navigator should solve a specific limitation of their current compass.

Magnetic north and the north shown by a map’s grid are different references. Ordnance Survey’s compass guidance explains that the difference depends on location and date. Check how the chosen compass handles variation and learn the method appropriate to the current map; adjustable declination is a feature to understand, not a replacement for that knowledge.

Check what can travel with them

If their hiking includes travel abroad, confirm the maker’s operating-region or needle-balancing guidance. The word expedition does not establish that every compass works equally well worldwide. Check the included lanyard or case and whether maps or teaching materials need to be bought separately.

For Christmas, a modest, readable compass and a plan to practise can be a thoughtful combination. Agree the format where the recipient has existing preferences, and avoid promising that any instrument alone will prevent them becoming lost.
