Lace Scarf: A light layer of pattern and detail

A scarf, a shoulder wrap or a finishing detail?

Look at the width as well as the length. A slim scarf gives a small decorative detail at the neck, while a wider piece can sit over the shoulders. The photograph may show it folded, so the flat dimensions are more useful than the apparent size.

Floral lace, geometric openwork and scalloped edges all give a different effect. Choose a pattern that belongs with the recipient’s clothes. Lace need not mean bridal styling, and a sheer accessory will not provide the warmth of a winter scarf.

Lace is not a fibre guarantee

The openwork pattern can use cotton, synthetic fibres or a blend. Read the actual composition and care instructions rather than assuming that lace means handmade or a particular material. A soft, neatly finished edge matters when it sits close to the neck.
