Karaoke Machine: Give the next chorus to the whole room

A karaoke machine brings microphones and amplified backing tracks together for singing at home. Some need a phone or TV for songs and lyrics; others include a screen. Choose the complete setup they’ll enjoy using.

Find out where the songs and words come from

A speaker and microphones don’t necessarily include a library of songs. A portable set may play backing tracks from a phone while lyrics stay on that phone or a separate TV. A machine with its own screen can make sharing the words easier, but its apps, internet connection and included song access still need checking.

Look beyond a Bluetooth badge. It may carry music from a phone without sending lyrics to a TV, and it doesn’t establish that the microphones connect in the same way. Match the exact inputs, display connection and supported song source.

Solo turns or duets?

  • Count the included microphones and check whether they can work together.

  • Compare music and microphone volume controls; the backing shouldn’t drown the singer.

  • Find out how microphones charge, whether replacement batteries are needed and what cables are supplied.

A compact portable unit can suit a bedroom singalong. A larger party system needs more storage and consideration for neighbours. Advertised peak wattage doesn’t give a simple measure of sound quality or useful home volume. An easy off switch is a feature everyone can agree on.

Ready for the first song

Set aside a way to hold the lyrics where singers can see them, and keep devices away from drinks. If a paid karaoke service is needed, make its cost and account ownership clear before giving the machine. Don’t promise that a streaming subscription includes every backing track or lyric feature.

Voice effects and lights are optional entertainment. Someone who wants to record careful vocals may need a different microphone and recording setup rather than a party speaker.

If sharing playlists is the main aim and singing is unlikely, a portable Bluetooth speaker is a simpler alternative.
