Hanukkah Menorah: Choose a menorah that feels like theirs
A Hanukkah menorah is a personal present, not just a decorative candle holder. Match its design and dimensions to the recipient, including the candles or oil they prefer to use.

Let their preferences lead
Someone moving into their own home might appreciate a menorah to bring out each Hanukkah. Someone with a much-loved family one may have no wish to replace it. Start by finding out which situation applies, and whether they would enjoy choosing a new design with you.
Ask how they light theirs and where it stands. Candles or oil, a small space or a broad surface, restrained metal or a colourful design: the useful details are personal. They matter more than finding the most impressive-looking model.
Look for the right kind of menorah
A Hanukkah menorah, or hanukkiah, has eight lights and a separate helper light called the shamash. Chabad explains the nine-light arrangement. A seven-branched Temple menorah is a different object, even though it can appear in the same search results.
Choose a design intended for the recipient's practice, with clearly separated holders and a distinct shamash. Electric models can provide a display; children's wooden sets offer play. Neither should be assumed to serve the same purpose as the candle or oil menorah someone uses for observance.
Fit the candles or oil cups
Read the dimensions of the holders, not just a claim that they take standard candles. If the recipient uses oil, check the maker's specified cups, wicks and other components. A compatible set saves them having to find out that the supplies they already own do not fit.
Confirm which accessories come in the box, including any pictured candles or cups.
If adding supplies, choose ones specified as compatible with that model.
Keep the instructions for placing, using and cleaning it with the present.
Make room for the whole piece
Measure its width, height and base against the intended spot, allowing the space around the lights that its instructions require. Look at stability as well as appearance. Also consider where it will be stored during the rest of the year; a large, delicate design needs more room than a compact metal one.
A modern shape or hand-painted finish can make the gift feel special when it reflects their taste. There is no single right decorative style for everyone. Choosing together is a sensible option when you know they would enjoy a new menorah but cannot confidently pick the design.
