Flower Vase: A home for the flowers they love
Choose a flower vase for the stems they display and the room where it will live. The neck, height and base shape affect its usefulness as much as its colour or pattern.

Start with what they put in a vase
A few stems cut from the garden need a different vessel from a generous bouquet. A narrow opening can hold a small bunch together; a wider one lets more stems spread out. Choose for their usual flowers, rather than the elaborate arrangement in the product photograph.
Check the opening and overall dimensions together. Height alone will not tell you how much space the vase takes up or whether a small bunch will disappear into it. If it is meant for a particular shelf or sideboard, allow room for the flowers too.
Useful with water, easy to clean
Check that the vase is intended to hold water if they will use fresh flowers. Some decorative ceramic vessels are suitable only for dried stems, so look for clear information about the inside rather than assuming the finish is sealed.
The base needs to keep the vase stable with the intended arrangement in it. Consider cleaning as well: a very narrow neck can make the inside harder to reach. Follow the maker's instructions instead of assuming every glass or ceramic vase can go in the dishwasher.
Which look would belong in their home?
Clear glass shows the stems as well as the blooms, and makes the water level visible.
Coloured glass can echo a shade they already use in the room.
Opaque ceramic makes the vessel's shape and finish a bigger part of the display.
A simple shape can work well, but plain is not automatically more personal than patterned. Look at the things they choose for their room. Someone who enjoys bold colour may welcome a vase you would never pick for your own home.
For someone who hosts meals, imagine the filled vase on the table. Shorter flowers in a low arrangement can leave room for conversation across it; a taller display might be better on a sideboard. Compare other gifts for entertaining if the table is already well supplied with decorative pieces.
Check what comes in the parcel
The listing may be for the vase alone, even when every photograph shows it full of flowers. Check the contents and selected size. If you add a bouquet, choose one that fits the opening and can travel comfortably with it.
For a recipient who likes keeping flowers rather than displaying fresh ones, a flower press kit offers a different activity. Our Christmas gift guide has other choices if you are unsure about buying something for their home.
