Garden Harvest Basket: For the walk back from the vegetable patch
A harvest basket or trug carries produce from the vegetable patch or allotment. Look for a useful working size, a comfortable handle and materials they can clean and dry.

Picture the trip from plot to kitchen
A gardener bringing courgettes, beans or flowers home from an allotment needs a carrier that suits the load. A shallow trug keeps delicate produce visible, while a deeper basket holds more. The best size is one they can comfortably carry full, rather than the biggest one on offer.
Look at the usable length, width and handle height. Long vegetables should fit without forcing them through the sides; soft fruit may need its own small punnet inside. Smooth edges and firmly attached handles matter every time the basket is picked up.
Willow, wood, mesh or plastic?
A traditional willow or wooden trug can be a lovely working object, provided its care suits the recipient. Follow the maker’s cleaning advice and allow it to dry. A wooden-frame mesh hod sheds loose soil, but small or fragile produce may need support. Plastic harvest carriers offer a different balance of washing, weight and appearance.
Some designs double as colanders; others are intended only for carrying. Establish the stated food-contact use rather than assuming that any holes make a basket suitable for rinsing vegetables. A fabric liner should be removable if it is likely to collect soil.
Keep the present useful
Choose around the crops they grow and the distance they carry them. A basket for gathering vegetables is a different purchase from a lined gift hamper or an indoor storage basket. If giving it at Christmas, keep the gift about the coming season rather than filling it early with things that will spoil.
For organising packets before sowing, a seed organiser solves another problem. A harvest basket earns its place when gathering the results is already part of their routine.
