Espresso Knock Box: Somewhere for the puck after the pour

A knock box collects used espresso grounds, with a sturdy bar to tap against. Choose it for someone with a portafilter machine who would appreciate a separate grounds bin beside their usual setup.

Look beside their coffee machine

After making an espresso, the used puck needs somewhere to go. A knock box provides a dedicated container and a bar to tap the portafilter against. It is a practical addition to a hands-on espresso setup, rather than a way to improve the drink itself.

Find out whether the recipient uses a portafilter and whether they already have a grounds bin. A bean-to-cup machine may collect its pucks internally, making a separate box less useful. Even with the right machine, another accessory needs to earn its space.

Leave room to use it

The footprint is only part of the size decision. There must also be room above the box to move the portafilter comfortably. Compare this with the position of shelves and cupboards around the machine.

A stated puck capacity is a rough guide, since basket sizes and emptying habits vary. Bigger is not necessarily better: a small container that is emptied frequently can suit a tidy worktop. Commercial floor-standing bins and under-grinder drawers are different forms with their own space requirements.

The bar, base and cleaning job

A stable non-slip base and secure knock bar make the basic design useful. Look at how the bar comes out, which surfaces can be reached and whether a worn part can be replaced. Keep the maker's care instructions for the exact combination of steel, plastic and rubber.

  • Allow space for the portafilter above the opening.

  • Establish how the box and bar come apart for washing.

  • Choose a capacity that suits regular emptying.

Damp grounds should not sit forgotten beneath a lid. Empty and clean the box routinely, and dispose of the contents appropriately. Do not assume that all removable parts can go in a dishwasher.

For a different missing piece, an espresso distribution and tamping set works before brewing; a coffee canister stores fresh beans. The knock box has the less glamorous but useful job at the other end of the process.

Our gifts for coffee lovers help compare this espresso accessory with presents for other brewing methods.
