Earrings: A little detail, chosen with their style in mind
Earrings work best as a gift when they belong with what the recipient likes wearing. Use a favourite pair as a clue to shape and scale, then check the fitting and materials rather than relying on the photograph.

Notice what they put on without thinking: small studs, neat hoops, something with a little movement. The useful question is how a new pair would fit into that wardrobe, rather than whether the design is fashionable this week.
Read the measurements alongside the pictures. A close-up can make a tiny stud look substantial, while a large drop may turn out heavier than expected. Compare the length and width with earrings they enjoy, and look for a stated weight when it will affect comfort.
The fitting is part of the choice
A pierced-ear hoop or stud is not a substitute for a clip-on. Jewellery for cartilage piercings can also use different post lengths and thicknesses from ordinary lobe earrings. Buy for a known fitting, not as an invitation to acquire a new piercing.
Establish whether the contents are two earrings, one individual piece or a set of several pairs.
Check how the closure works and which backs are included.
Allow for collars, scarves and hair that may catch a projecting design.
Be precise about the metal
If the wearer has sensitivities, start with materials they know suit them. A seller’s “hypoallergenic” label does not promise the same experience for everyone. The decorative body, post and back may each use a different metal.
A sterling-silver description, often given as 925, should apply to the parts you intend to buy. Sterling posts alone do not establish a sterling-silver body. Gold plating is a layer of gold over another material; it should not be mistaken for solid gold.
Use the specific sterling-silver or gold-plated shopping choice when that is the point of the gift. Read the exact finish selected and its care instructions, since silver-coloured or gold-tone alternatives can appear in the same results.
For an anniversary recipient who rarely wears earrings, explore other anniversary gifts instead of trying to change their habits.
