Dreidel Game Set: A little game to share at Hanukkah
A set of dreidels can bring a traditional game to a Hanukkah visit or gathering. Pick tops with clear letters and useful instructions, and check whether the box includes anything to count with.

Make space for a few turns
Dreidel is a traditional spinning-top game that can be part of a Hanukkah gathering. A small set suits someone who would enjoy playing with family or showing newcomers how it works. If they already have a drawer full of tops, a larger pack is unlikely to add much.
Each four-sided top carries Hebrew game letters. Chabad's guide to playing dreidel explains the markings and what happens on a turn. If the players are unfamiliar with them, clear instructions belong in the gift; check whether they are on a card, the packaging or a separate leaflet.
Look beyond the number in the pack
Choose a handle and body size the intended players can use comfortably. Tiny tops take less space but may be harder to grasp. Larger ones need a suitable place to spin. Readable letters, with explanations or transliterations where useful, help everyone recognise the result.
Natural wood, painted wood and plastic sets offer different finishes. The important distinction is between a usable marked game top and an ornament or blank supplied for decorating. Buy the game they will want to play, rather than a craft project unless that is what you intend.

How many dreidels are supplied, and does that quantity suit the household or group?
Are the instructions included, and will they remain available after the packaging is discarded?
Are there counting pieces, chocolate gelt or a storage pouch, or just the tops?
Suitable counting pieces from home can be enough, so chocolate is optional. If adding edible gelt, check the ingredients and any dietary or kosher requirements against the exact product. Small pieces need care around children who may put them in their mouths; follow the manufacturer's age guidance.
The gift is a game together
A quick practice round can help newcomers settle in. Dreidel depends on the spin rather than a tactical plan, so do not assume a keen strategy gamer will want it for the same reasons as a board game. Choose it for the people and occasion.
