Domino Set: Bring a favourite tile game to the table

A domino set is a reusable collection of marked tiles for matching and scoring games. Pick the tile range, size and accessories around the rules they enjoy.

Find out which dominoes they play

A familiar tile game can be a thoughtful present when the recipient already enjoys it. Choose a set of marked playing dominoes, rather than coloured blocks intended for toppling runs or construction play.

The set description matters. Double-six means the largest number on one half of a tile is six; it doesn't mean six tiles come in the box. A complete double-six set has 28 tiles, double-nine has 55 and double-twelve has 91. Their usual rules should lead that choice, rather than the largest set automatically being better.

Look closely at the pieces

Readable pips and a clear dividing line are useful at the table. Compare the stated dimensions and thickness: a pocket set can be convenient to carry and awkward for someone who wants larger pieces. Coloured dots can help distinguish values, but the colour alone shouldn't be essential to reading them.

Some tiles stand comfortably on their edges; other sets are easier to use with racks. Check the finish, material and weight, and whether a fitted box or tin keeps the pieces together between games.

  • Choose a playing size they can comfortably handle.

  • Look for clear contrast between the pips and tile face.

  • Check the closed case size if the set will travel.

A set for the actual rules

Domino games don't all use the same extras. Hubs, markers and racks may be included for a particular version, while a traditional set may provide only tiles and instructions. Read the contents rather than relying on a Mexican Train or family-game label.

If they are learning, a clear rules leaflet for the game they want is more helpful than a decorative case alone. Follow the manufacturer's age guidance, particularly where small pieces may be accessible to younger children.

A chess set offers another traditional board game for someone who prefers that challenge. For social prompts or word guessing, a party card game is a different kind of evening.
