Choose the house they will play with
Rearranging the bedroom can be as much fun as acting out a family dinner. A dolls’ house offers a setting the child can keep changing. Look for open, reachable rooms if the gift is meant for play; miniature model kits made for careful assembly and display are a different proposition.
Their figures decide the scale
Start with any dolls or little characters they already love. A small wooden play family and a tall fashion doll need very different doorways, beds and ceiling heights. Check the manufacturer’s intended doll size or scale, then compare the actual dimensions. Similar-looking photographs can conceal a large mismatch.
Find its home in advance
Get the grown-up’s agreement on where it will stand and how much space it needs in use. Leave room to sit, move furniture and reach into the rooms. Taller houses may need securing as directed, and adult assembly can take more than the gap between breakfast and present opening.
Read the contents list rather than relying on a staged room photograph. Furniture, dolls and little accessories may be sold separately. Follow the exact age guidance, remembering younger siblings who might find small pieces after the main player has moved on.
A manageable world of their own
A few well-fitting pieces can start a story more readily than an enormous box of accessories. Lights, sound and working lifts bring extra battery or moving-part decisions; none is essential to a satisfying house. For a birthday or Christmas surprise, make the practical arrangements before the parcel lands.
If there is no room for a house, hand puppets offer another way to invent characters and put on a show.
