Cufflinks: A pair that belongs with their favourite shirt

A well-chosen pair of cufflinks can make a familiar shirt feel ready for an occasion. Choose around the cuffs they wear, a fastening they can manage and a design that suits their taste.

Begin with their shirt cuffs

Before choosing a design, establish whether they wear shirts that take cufflinks. Double cuffs, also called French cuffs, fold back and fasten through matching holes. A normal button cuff may have no suitable opening for a separate pair.

Use one of their favourite shirts as a reference if you can. The thickness of the folded cuff and the space around it help you judge whether a substantial front or short post will work comfortably.

Choose a fastening as thoughtfully as the design

On a swivel-back pair, the toggle lines up with the post to go through the holes, then turns across them to hold the cuff. Chain links and fixed double-ended designs work differently. A pair should be pleasant to put on, rather than a tiny puzzle before every outing.

  • Count two cufflinks in the actual contents; a single replacement or shirt-stud set is a different purchase.

  • Look at the width and depth of the decorative front beside their cuff and jacket sleeve.

  • Separate the cufflink count from tie clips, studs and other pieces in a gift set.

A simple shape can sit happily beside several shirts. An initial, texture or small motif is worth choosing when it says something about their taste, without assuming they want a novelty design.

Read what the metal description actually promises

Sterling silver is an alloy commonly marked or described as 925. It can tarnish, so the wearer needs care instructions appropriate to any stone, shell or other detail as well as the metal. Silver-coloured stainless steel is a separate choice, not proof of silver content.

Gold plating places a layer of gold over a different material. A plated pair is not solid gold: the base metal, finish and care requirements still matter. A listing that only says gold-tone or gives a colour does not establish real gold plating.

Use the sterling-silver or gold-plated shopping choice when that material is the purpose of the gift. The ordinary cufflinks search remains available for other designs. Read the exact selected finish before ordering, particularly when one listing offers several colours.

If the pair is for an anniversary, the wearer’s taste comes before the tradition. Browse anniversary gift ideas for other ways to mark the occasion.
