Camping Tent: Choose a tent for their kind of camping

A camping tent is a substantial present that works best when the recipient can help choose the space, packed size and pitching style they want.

Let their trips lead the choice

Ask how the recipient normally camps before choosing a tent. A car-boot journey to a family campsite allows a different shelter from a walking trip with everything carried in a rucksack. Festivals, weekend breaks and longer stays bring their own preferences about space and setup.

Compare measurements as well as the advertised berth count. A stated number of people does not tell you how much room remains for bags or broad sleeping mats. Check floor dimensions, sitting or standing height, door access and porch storage against their actual needs.

Packed shape and pitching style

Pole-supported domes, pop-up tents and larger instant designs pack and pitch differently. Check the complete packed weight and dimensions, including poles and pegs. An easy-looking setup photograph does not establish that a large package will fit their transport or storage space.

Read the manufacturer’s intended seasons and weather guidance, along with ventilation, flysheet coverage and groundsheet construction. Fabric waterproofing figures are only one part of the design. A general campsite tent should not be presented as suitable for every exposed location or extreme condition.

Buy a complete, wanted shelter

Confirm exactly what arrives: inner tent, flysheet, poles, pegs, guy lines and bag where the design requires them. A matching footprint may cost extra. Check that the selected price relates to the correct size and complete tent, rather than a replacement part shown alongside it.

At Christmas or for a birthday, a jointly chosen tent can support trips the recipient is looking forward to. Retain the receipt and leave time to check the contents and practise pitching before departure. Consider where the tent will be dried and stored at home too.

A camping hammock offers a separate outdoor resting or sleeping arrangement with support requirements of its own. A hiking pole set may suit a smaller equipment present when the camper wants to select their shelter themselves.
