Bookbinding Thread: Keep their bookmaking stitches supplied
Binding thread is a useful refill when its gauge, length and finish suit the books the recipient likes to sew.

Let their pattern choose the gauge
Pamphlet stitches and multi-section bindings place different demands on thread. Check the maker’s usual gauge and needle before choosing a spool. The thread must pass through the holes comfortably without adding unwanted bulk at the spine.
Quantity deserves a separate check. A large-looking spool may contain a different length from another brand, while a set can divide its total across several colours. Buy enough of each colour for the planned sewing rather than relying on the total alone.
A familiar finish or a colour change?
Waxed and unwaxed thread handle differently. Linen, polyester and thicker cords are all found in UK binding searches, but a bookbinding label does not make every thickness suitable for every paper or stitch. Follow the project specification when choosing a new material.
For an experienced binder, a refill of a trusted thread can be more useful than another tool set. If colour is the surprise, keep the gauge and finish familiar. Check whether needles are supplied and whether they fit the chosen thread.
This is a material for someone with a sewing method to follow. A bookbinding kit may be a better starting point if the recipient still needs instructions, paper and basic tools.
