Bookbinding Board Pack: Firm foundations for handmade covers

Bookbinding board helps a maker build a sturdy cover of their own, provided its thickness, size and cutting needs fit the project.

The thickness is part of the design

A hardback cover needs more than a sheet that looks substantial. Greyboard, chipboard and binder's board listings span different thicknesses, so check the measurement and intended use. Corrugated packing card and thin backing card are not interchangeable with dense cover board.

Use the binding pattern as the starting point. Board thickness affects the hinge and covering work, as well as the feel of the finished book. Small notebooks and larger albums do not necessarily need the same stock.

Whole sheets or ready-cut pieces?

A4 and A3 packs give flexibility, while smaller ready-cut boards can make a known project simpler. Work out whether the sheets accommodate two covers and any spine strip, with the pattern's allowances. Check quantity and delivery protection; crushed corners and bowed sheets are poor starting points for a neat cover.

Larger or thicker boards need an appropriate cutting setup. Ask what the recipient already uses rather than assuming scissors or a basic craft knife will be enough. Covering cloth, glue and cutting equipment are separate purchases unless the listing explicitly includes them.

Choose this for someone who enjoys making their own bindings and already has a method to follow. For a first attempt, a bookbinding kit with prepared materials and instructions may be the more useful gift.
