Book Press: Space to hold a handmade book in progress
A book press can be a useful workbench addition when its plate area, opening and controls suit the books the recipient makes.

The useful area is inside the fixings
Start with the largest book the recipient expects to press. The space between bolts or other fixings is often smaller than the overall plate, so compare usable dimensions carefully. Check the maximum opening as well, allowing for protective boards used in their process.
Compact wooden presses are common in UK searches. Some need assembly and repeated adjustment of several nuts. Look at how the plates meet and how comfortably the maker can operate the fixings, particularly when choosing for someone with limited hand strength.
Make room for the tool
A press needs a stable place to work and somewhere to be stored. Weight and operating clearance are part of the gift, not just the plate size. A larger model may be awkward on a small dining table or in a shared craft space.
Follow the product instructions for assembly and use, and the binding method for pressing time and protective materials. The tool cannot rescue every adhesive problem or guarantee that an uneven book dries flat.
Choose this for someone with a bookmaking process already in mind. Compare a bookbinding kit if they need a first project; check separately whether it includes any press. A flower-press kit is another purchase decision, even when the mechanisms look similar.
