Bocce is a game of rolling larger balls close to a small target. Start with where they will play and how far they will need to carry the set.

Think about the ground first
A clear, fairly level area of short grass is a useful starting point for casual play. On thick grass the balls stop more quickly; on a slope they drift. Choose a place away from footpaths and allow room beyond the target.
Check it is a whole set
Look for distinct groups of balls and a small target ball, sometimes called a pallino. Some listings are for a spare target or single balls. Compare the size in the hand and the packed weight. If the recipients already play with a club, ask which game and ball specification they use before buying.
