Choose for the birds, not the paintwork
For a birdwatcher who enjoys what happens in their own garden, a nest box can be a welcome project. Choose a useful home for local birds rather than a tiny decorated house. It needs an appropriate position and someone willing to fit and maintain it.
Start with the local species
In the UK, enclosed boxes and open-fronted designs serve different birds. RSPB guidance distinguishes smaller entrances for species such as Blue Tits from larger openings for birds such as House Sparrows; open-fronted boxes have different siting needs. Match the actual design and dimensions to the intended species, rather than trusting a broad list on the packaging.
Look inside the construction
Untreated timber, drainage, ventilation and access for cleaning are useful features to compare. An outside perch isn't needed on a cavity nest box and can help unwanted visitors. Look for sound joints, a roof that sheds rain and fixings suitable for the intended support.
Agree the place before giving the box
The recipient needs a suitable, permitted mounting position, away from unnecessary disturbance and avoidable predator access. Follow advice for the target species rather than applying one height or direction to every box. Leave occupied nests undisturbed; cleaning belongs after nesting has finished and under the relevant local guidance.
Confirm the internal dimensions and entrance suit the intended species.
Establish how the box opens for cleaning without weakening its mounting.
Allow for appropriate fixings or a pole and predator guard when needed.
For someone who mainly wants to watch the birds already visiting, birdwatching binoculars offer a closer view without introducing a nesting site.
