Bath Toy: A new game for the splashy part of the day

A floating creature or little pouring toy can make a thoughtful present when it suits the child and their bath-time routine. Look at the action, age guidance and the washing-up afterwards.

Pick the game before the number of pieces

Does the child like making up stories with floating animals, or filling and emptying little containers? A squirter asks for a different squeeze and grip from a simple float. Ask the grown-up which toys get used and what would add something new.

Consider the space around the bath

A compact float is easy to put away; a wall-mounted play station may need a particular surface and more storage. Pouring toys can also change how splashy things become. Choose something that works in this bathroom rather than assuming every family wants a large set.

Cleaning is part of the choice

Check whether the toy opens, is sealed or needs careful draining. The maker’s washing and drying directions matter, especially for hollow designs. A toy with a small hole is not necessarily easy to clean inside, and dishwasher suitability should be checked rather than guessed.

Use the individual product’s age guidance. Compare moving parts, loose pieces and the action with the child’s abilities. Keep the instructions with the present and the family’s usual close supervision at bath time.

A small toy can be a complete present

For a stocking, compare the whole small-toy pack with the opening, including any card or box. A single well-chosen float may be more welcome than another big assortment. Larger play stations can still be lovely gifts, but should not be treated as stocking fillers.
