Artist Sketchbook: A fresh page for ideas that are still taking shape
A drawing sketchbook gives them room for studies, experiments and everyday observation, with paper and binding chosen for the materials they enjoy.

Choose the paper before the cover
A sketchbook is a place to try things, not an obligation to produce finished art. It can be a thoughtful gift for someone who carries a pencil on walks, works through compositions or keeps small studies between larger projects.
Match the paper to their usual materials. Smooth sheets suit fine pen work; a little texture helps graphite or coloured pencil grip. Wet painting needs paper specifically suited to that medium. A thick-looking book is not automatically a watercolour sketchbook, and alcohol markers need their own paper checks.
Make it easy to open and use
Spiral binding folds back for work in a small space. A sewn book that opens comfortably across a spread may suit wider sketches, while a firm cover gives support away from a desk. Look at how the binding behaves rather than choosing purely by appearance.
A size that belongs in their routine
A pocket book is easy to take out; a larger page leaves room for broad studies but can stay at home if it is awkward to carry. Compare it with the book they already reach for. Paper quality and a useful size matter more than an impressive page count.
A mechanical pencil set is a useful companion when the lead sizes suit their drawing. Keep the first page blank unless you know they would welcome a personal note there.
