Make it a shared choice
A dress form lets the recipient arrange fabric and inspect the way a garment hangs away from a flat table. Panels adjust the torso within the model's stated limits, supporting fitting, draping and alteration work. It is a substantial piece of equipment whose usefulness depends on the recipient's projects.
It is worth choosing together. Some mannequins sold as adjustable only have a height-adjustable pole beneath a fixed body. Look for genuine body adjustment if the recipient expects to set the bust, waist and hips.
Expect a useful model, not a perfect copy
Circumference is only part of body shape. Back length, shoulders and the relationship between measurements can still differ when the main dials are set correctly. Padding may help refine a smaller form, but cannot reduce one that is too large at its minimum setting.
Check the type of garments and the wearer the recipient sews for; those are not necessarily the recipient's own measurements. Trouser fitting may need a suitable offset mount or specific lower-body arrangement. A standard dress form is not automatically equipped for every kind of garment.
Check how they will work with it
Read the pinning instructions rather than relying on a fabric covering or the word pinnable. Some forms are designed for pins placed at an angle through the cover, rather than pushed directly into the body. That distinction matters for someone who wants to drape and pin extensively.
A suitable working height and stable stand are essential practical checks. Allow for the base footprint, assembly and moving or storing the form. A hem marker is a useful extra when needed, but cannot compensate for unsuitable dimensions or a form that overwhelms the room.
