Ask what is missing from their case
An eyepiece set changes the viewing choices available through an existing telescope. It isn't a telescope on its own, and several new pieces aren't necessarily better than one eyepiece the observer has asked for. Find out what they already use and which views they want to improve.
Barrel size and focal length are different
The barrel is the part that fits into the telescope's holder. Common sizes include 1.25 and 2 inches; some older instruments use 0.965-inch fittings. Match the exact telescope or adapter specification. The eyepiece's focal length, usually marked in millimeters, determines magnification with that telescope.
Work out useful magnification
Divide the telescope's focal length by the eyepiece's focal length to calculate magnification. A 1,000mm telescope with a 20mm eyepiece gives 50x. Shorter eyepieces raise magnification, but the telescope, conditions and target limit what remains useful. An extravagant power claim doesn't create more visible detail.
Count useful eyepieces, not every accessory
Compare the focal lengths against what they already own. Eye relief is the distance at which the eye can comfortably see the view; it can matter especially with glasses. Included Barlow lenses multiply magnification and may duplicate settings. Colored or Moon filters are separate accessories, not additional eyepieces.
Confirm barrel fit, any required adapter and the telescope maker's limits.
Compare comfortable viewing and practical focal lengths before kit piece count.
Check whether a protective case and caps are supplied.
