Headlamp: Light where they look, with hands left free

A headlamp keeps a useful beam close to the task, whether they are pitching a tent or walking after dusk. Choose comfortable fit, practical controls and power they can keep supplied.

The beam matters more than the biggest number

A broad beam helps with nearby camp tasks; a more focused beam can help pick out the route ahead. Some lamps offer both. Compare the intended use and runtime at the brightness the recipient will actually choose, rather than treating maximum output and maximum runtime as simultaneous promises.

For a camper, a low setting can be more pleasant than a dazzling flood of light. For hiking or evening walks, the useful beam pattern and reliable power supply deserve more attention than an extravagant headline lumen claim.

Give equal attention to fit and controls

Check the complete weight with batteries, strap adjustment and how the lamp tilts. A bulky battery pack or bouncing strap can make an otherwise bright lamp uncomfortable. Controls should be easy to find, including with the gloves they wear, and the selected mode should be understandable without cycling through every flashing setting.

Check the power arrangement before buying: replaceable cells, a built-in rechargeable battery or a compatible removable pack. Confirm which battery, cable and charger are supplied. Rechargeable does not mean the lamp can be replenished away from a power source, so discuss a backup for longer outings.

Buy for the conditions they expect

Read the maker’s specific water-resistance rating and limitations. A lamp suitable for rain is not automatically suitable for immersion. Storage lockout can help avoid accidental activation inside a bag, but check how it works on the actual model.

A birthday or Christmas gift is most useful when you know whether it will be a camp-task light, a regular walking companion or a replacement for existing hiking equipment. It provides illumination; it does not replace route planning, appropriate equipment or road visibility measures. Keep the beam out of other people’s eyes and choose a low setting around shared camp spaces.

Reading a chart after dark

Someone using a star chart planisphere may value an easy-to-select dim setting more than maximum brightness. Establish which low-light modes the actual lamp provides, and keep the beam away from other observers. A general headlamp isn't automatically a specialist astronomy light.
