Choose it for the player
Backgammon combines decisions about moving checkers with the uncertainty of a dice roll. A physical set can be a welcome gift for someone who already enjoys the game or has expressed an interest in learning it with another player.
Start with a complete playing set. The board has 24 triangular points, and play uses 30 checkers, 15 of each color. Check for ordinary dice and clear rules; dice cups and a doubling cube are useful inclusions when the recipient's style of play uses them. A checker refill or board-only listing is not the same gift.
Comfortable at home, practical to store
Look at the open board dimensions and checker diameter together. The pieces need room to sit clearly on the points; a small case is less convenient if the playing area feels cramped. Compare the contrast of the board, points and checkers rather than choosing by the exterior finish alone.
A folding case can keep the contents together. Check that it opens flat, the hinges sit neatly and the clasp holds when carried. A felt-like playing surface and a smooth wooden surface can feel and sound different when rolling dice. Neither material name establishes the quality of the whole set.
For travel, compare closed dimensions and weight. A compact version may suit short trips, while someone who plays longer sessions at home may prefer more room. Keep the recipient's actual use ahead of an impressive size claim.
A familiar game, or a new one to learn?
Include the rules supplied with the exact set, especially for a beginner. The doubling cube is a special numbered cube used in some scoring formats, not another ordinary die. Choose a set that explains its contents without assuming the recipient needs competition equipment.
If they play at a club, ask about the board and checker sizes they prefer. Spare checkers and replacement parts are worth checking, but should not be assumed from a photograph.
