Tea Cosy: A little comfort for their usual pot of tea

Choose a tea cosy around the teapot they already use. Shape, dimensions and washing instructions make more difference than an elaborate pattern.

A gift for a pot they already love

A tea cosy covers a teapot between servings. It makes most sense for someone who enjoys making a pot, rather than a person who always brews straight into a mug. Start with their existing teapot and choose something that belongs with it.

Take measurements, not a guess. Check the height, widest point and distance from handle to spout. “Fits most teapots” is less useful than dimensions you can compare with the actual pot.

How will they pour?

A dome-shaped cover lifts off before the tea is poured. A wraparound cosy can leave the spout and handle exposed. Look at the openings, access to the lid and how easily the pot can be held without trailing fabric in the way.

Padded cotton covers and knitted cosies have different textures and care needs. Read the material and washing instructions for the exact item; do not assume every cosy can go in the washing machine. A colour they enjoy seeing in the kitchen can be a better choice than a joke design.

A small note about a favourite shared tea break gives the gift a personal touch. If you add a tea tasting selection, choose flavours they would enjoy. A well-fitting cosy is enough on its own when their usual pot already does the job.
