Storybook Advent Calendar: A new little book for story time
A storybook advent calendar gives the countdown a shared reading moment. Check the story list, reading level and daily contents so the small books suit the person you will read with.

Share a story during the countdown
A storybook calendar can turn opening a door into a few minutes together. Choose the stories and format around their reading routine: a short read aloud, a book they can tackle themselves or a continuing tale.
Stories, activities or one book in parts?
Check the actual contents before buying. A calendar may contain separate little storybooks, a mix of books and activities, or a longer story divided into daily sections. If the aim is a bedtime story each evening, make sure that is what the set provides.
A book-themed calendar may contain no stories at all. Decorative miniature books, tree ornaments and reading accessories are different sorts of present. Look for readable books and a clear description of what each day brings.
Get the reading level right
Read the book list and check for titles already on their shelf. A favourite character is a useful clue, but the length, print size and language still need to suit the reader. Age guidance for listening to a story is not the same as independent reading ability.
For a daily shared read, think about the time the household wants to spend. A continuing tale may need the sessions to follow an order; separate stories are easier to enjoy around evenings away. Check with the adults before giving a child a calendar that assumes their participation.
After the last door
Compare booklet size, binding and the number of books as well as the countdown length. Keep the display or another suitable box so the little stories can stay together and be read again. Avoid assuming that every calendar contains 24 different books.
If they would prefer to read a series when they choose, consider a book box set. Another way to share a countdown is to choose books already in the house and set one aside each day. The reading time can be the present without buying 24 more books.
