A tasting set for the way they cook
For someone who likes giving a simple meal a little extra attention, different olive oils can be an absorbing gift. A small selection lets them discover which they prefer on bread, vegetables or a salad, without finding room for several full-sized bottles.
Decide whether they would enjoy comparing plain extra virgin oils or trying infused flavours. Plain oils make variety, producer and origin part of the tasting. Garlic, herb or chilli infusions give them new finishing ingredients. Neither is automatically the better choice.
Look beyond the number of bottles
Read the volumes: many tiny bottles can add up to less oil than a compact selection.
Check whether the box also contains balsamic vinegar, and how much of it is olive oil.
Use the ingredient lists to check flavours, allergens and dietary suitability.
For a plain-oil collection, useful producer details and a harvest date can tell you more than decorative packaging. Look at the shelf life, especially if you are ordering well ahead of Christmas.
Give them a reason to open it
Add a loaf or a short tasting suggestion rather than more equipment. A little of each oil on plain bread gives them a starting point; their favourites can then go into the meals they already make. Follow the bottle instructions for storage, keeping oils tightly closed and away from heat and light.
If they prefer experimenting at the hob, consider a spice gift set. For someone who likes adding heat to a finished meal, a hot sauce gift set is a different kind of tasting.
