Gardening Gloves: Useful from the first muddy job

A comfortable pair of gardening gloves is a small gift with regular use. Choose the hand size, material and cuff coverage for the work the gardener actually does.

Begin with their hands

A well-chosen pair is more thoughtful than a generic multipack. Compare the maker's palm and finger measurements with a pair they already wear. Loose fingertips get in the way of planting; a tight fit is uncomfortable when gripping tools.

Choose for a task

Flexible coated gloves suit many everyday potting and weeding jobs. Heavier leather and longer cuffs can be useful for rougher handling, but may reduce dexterity. Consider wet grip, drying and washing instructions as well as appearance.

Protection has limits. Do not take a broad 'thorn-proof' label as a promise that nothing can pierce the glove. Check materials and seams, account for sensitivities, and use the protection required by any particular tool or job.

A replacement for a worn favourite or a clean spare can be appreciated. If buying blind, choose a retailer with practical size exchanges rather than assuming a one-size design will fit.
