A halfway house for young plants

A cold frame can be useful when plants are moving from protected growing towards the garden. Unlike a raised bed, it has a clear lid; unlike a heated greenhouse, it does not create a reliably warm environment. Its appeal is modest shelter in a manageable space.

  • Agree a suitable light position with enough room to open the lid.

  • Check lid stays and how easily the ventilation can be adjusted.

  • Confirm assembly, glazing care and how the frame is secured against wind.

Protection is not a frost-free promise

Unheated frames can offer some protection, but the plants and local weather still determine what they can tolerate. Warm sunshine can also heat a closed frame quickly, so ventilation is part of the daily routine.

Treat the space as part of the present. A cold frame is a good larger gift when the gardener wants it and has a place ready. Surprise them with the idea, rather than a large box that commits them to an awkward location and assembly job.
